Swimwear - Flatter Your Body Shape With The Right Style

Summer is upon us in the northern hemisphere so I’ll blog about the sizzling topic of swimwear. And what style of swimwear flatters which body shape - disregarding weight, fat/muscle mass distribution and width.

In Jamu we categorise body shapes into –

Hourglass – Your bust and hips are roughly the same circumference and your waist is smaller than both bust and hips.

Pear – Your hips are 2 inches or more larger than your bust in circumference.

Apple – Your waist is 2 inches or more larger than your bust and hips in circumference.

Rectangle  – Your bust, waist and hips are about the same circumference.

Inverted V – Your bust is at least 4 inches larger than your hips in circumference.

To those who are so lucky to be 8% of the women population with an hour glass figure – you can wear anything!  Well, in terms of style but you’ll still want to be careful about your choice in terms of colours and print which depends on skin tone and hair colour. Be patient – that will be covered in future blogs.

In this blog we will talk about flattering the pear body shape, and over the coming weeks we’ll cover a body shape each week.  So keep checking our blog if you are not a pear body shape.

So, attention to women with pear body shape… I have a big, big DON’T for you and is, DO NOT WEAR FULL PANT OR BOARD SHORTS.  Read further and see pictures below to get what I mean.

In my years of fitting women with swimwear I keep having pear body shape women asking for large pant or swim pant to cover their larger-than-their-waist hip.  This is a huge mistake. You only bring attention to what you are trying to ‘hide’ by covering it with block colour of fabrics or prints.

So, here are the do’s and don’ts -

    -  Wear pants that gives you leg line (ie high’ish cut).
    -  Wear swimwear with a lot of design details focused at the top (eg frills on bikini top) so the attention is to it rather than your bottom. This is more the case with wearing tankini and one-piece.

    -  Asymmetrical detail on a one-piece will flatter you.

    -  When wearing a halter neck bikinis NEVER wear it with a large pant (or board shorts) as it will accentuate your shape.

Let’s see what I’m trying to say with pictures. I have used photoshop to change the shape of my model (and garment where necessary) to demonstrate.
